What do you do when your skin is itchy and irritated from dryness?
I've been experiencing itchiness especially on my back, the areas that my hands can't reach.
Whenever I try to apply lotion or oil, I still have spots that are extremely ashy and today gasp they were peeling a bit...
here's the unflattering picture :(
i hate when i look ashy!!
I have to say I am also guilty of taking long hot showers!!
I decided to do a milk bath, in the hope that it will relieve some of the itchiness. I read about milk baths in Lisa Price's Success Never Smelled so sweet. She recommends using whole milk that you buy at the grocery store but I loove milk too much to put in a bath as I'd rather drink it :)
(off topic: same thing with avocados. Apparently mashed avocados are great as a hair mask but I can't!! Avocado with bread...yummy!!!)
So I got a few milk powders from FNWL (From Nature with Love)
I didn't use precise measures since I was just experimenting..
You can also use any whole milk powder, for instance Nido
Here's what I used:
- a combination of 3 milk powders: buttermilk, goat's milk and whole milk
- 1 tsp of rose powder from Shea Butter Cottage
an alternative is to use use rose petals, or even chamomile/ calendula, lavender, etc..
-some whole oats
and a little bit of cocoa butter
another alternative is adding a tsp of an oil i.e olive oil, sweet almond oil, etc..

May I say it was a very relaxing bath!!!!
Afterwards, I use Hairveda's Avosoya oil (great stuff)
The results:
it definitely relieved some of the itchiness and I will repeat them in the future..
The "after" picture won't be truthful since the oil is still sinking it but I still have dry areas that the oil couldn't reach :(
How do you do moisturize areas in your back that your hands can't reach?
Do you like milk baths? Please share your milk baths recipes :)

Hermana --- I am soooooooooo trying this this weekend !!!!!
@Bella: Que bien Bella! Por fa' let me know how it works for you :)
Looks like it works....
This always happens to me during winter time, my skin starts itching for no particular reason! I thought it was just me, lol. Great tips :)
I try to reach my back as well as I can when I moisturize. I’m sure I miss some spots. That bath sounds heavenly; too bad I’m not a bath girl unless I’m in pain from a workout…LOL
Ohmigooodness, a milk bath sounds divine. Bathes in general are just necessary for me--especially when I'm all stressed out. I'm pretty good at moisturizing my back. Or am I? I'll check tonight. LOL!
That is exactly what I need! So going try it Saturday morning.
Sorry about the itch and dryness, I recommend hydrocortisone cream with natural colloidal oatmeal. Very effecteive and proven to work. You can get it at Rite Aid or CVS. Hope you feel better. I wish I had a recipe for milk baths. I never do such, only bubble baths.Have a fun weekend.
My skin has also been drier than usual this winter. I will definitely try out this milk bath recipe. Thanks!

I have extremely dry skin and am always looking for ways to keep it moisturized....The Shea Butters from Shea Radiance have helped me tremendously.
I love milk bath recipes but tend to make a lotion from scratch with Goatsmilk liquid and then use that in my bath. It's almost like a dispersing bath oil.
@everyone: thank you for your suggestions and sharing your experience. For those who try the bath milk, please let me know how it works for you.
@Anne-Marie: thank you for visiting my blog. Your lotion sounds divine!!
you need someone special to give you an oil massage ;) problem solved, he he
@Ren: i know!! but i don't have that special someone :(
great post! i thought my dryness and itchy-ness just came from the weather, gaining weight and being a mother. all sorts of things are happening to me that i saw my mother go thru that i thought was goofy. now, not so much. the kid is around to make sure i'm aware fo all of it =(
oh yeh i def have one of those back brushes with the long handle that feels soooo good!
@yummy: you might be right. I also gained weight and in the past the itchiness wasn't really bad.
do you use of the back brushes to apply some kind of moisturizers? I used to own one but it made it worse...the extra scrubbing just irritated more :(
This sounds loooovely! I really want to give this a go. Thanks for the great post!
Hi Amina, I came across your site via Topstitch Girl.
To apply lotion to my back where I can't reach it. I'd purchased a back mositurizer called Roll-a-Lotion - here is the link:
