My henna experience

I haven't used henna in years!
When I was little, we used to put henna on our hands and feets for Eid- Il-Fitr (holiday that marks the end of Ramadan) and draw big flowers on the palm of our hands.
I started using it on my hair when I was a teen but eventually I stopped because it was too drying.

In Nairobi, many women did henna treatments at the hair salons but on my relaxed hair it was asking for disaster. Looking back, I never pre-pooed, deep conditioned nor moisturized properly before and after a henna application. No wonder my hair was soooo dry!!

So I've been wanting to color my hair and decided to experiment with henna.
When I was little, we mixed henna with cloves, lemon, black tea and sometimes sugar in order to get a fierce color. This time, I decided to keep it simple because my scalp is allergic to all citrus oils/juices .
So I just added warm water.

I bought my henna from Mehandi and this is the Punjabi Primer body art quality henna.
I used almost 100 g for one application.

As soon as I mixed it, I put in my hair. I did it section by section without gloves so my hands were a bit stained.
Note to self: buy gloves at the Beauty Supply Store

I left it on for 5 hours while I was playing the sims 3 (it is soo addictive) then rinsed it out

Hello Definition!!!!

To restore moisture, I did an overnight treatment with Njoi Creations ayurvedic hair butter

The results of the henna and overnight treatment : SOFT and very defined hair. I was amazed at how my hair texture was so enhanced!!

I also just added as a leave-in oil Njoi Creations ayurvedic hair oil(GREAT STUFF!)

so my gray hair is now...ORANGE..lol
but overall, I can see the color deposited by henna when I am in the sun

I will definitely repeat the henna and leave it longer to see if I can get more color.

Have you tried henna before to color your hair?
I would love to hear about your henna experiences :)

Once again you're working it like the rent is due!! I like to use henna although I don't like the smell. I let mine sit overnight in the fridge for maximum color release. I do a real simple mix of just water henna and a splash of rose water.

I know my mom use henna all the time back home and her hair color now is very dark (her grey hair is also orange, lol) and she loves it, never had a problem with it.
And I am really feeling your bare minimum which is lip balm, mine is lip gloss, even if my skin is oily and that I am having major acne issues, I am still not using make up right now, it's too hot.
You are looking georgous on the pictures, I love your skin tone.

@avartsy: the color you just described sound fabulous! Are you going for it?

@hijabi: thank you girl!! I am going to do it again and will post more pictures

@soukho: thank you! Does your mom mix it with plain water. Oh yes, it is too hot to wear anything else than lipbalm.

@PJD: thank you.The pattern is the reason why I bought the dress..lol

@African chocolate: merci tres chere.Je pense que c'est possible mais je ne peux pas affirmer comme je n ai jamais essaye. Je ne sais pas quelle couleur tu obtiendras en melangeant les deux....tu peux essayer sur une meche de cheveux et voir ce que ca donne :)

@B: girl, I want that bold color too! I'll do the henna every week until I run out of it which won't be difficult because I only bought 300 g. I'll let you know how it goes..

aaw..my fro is drooling on your locs...lol

as for dresses...too much trouble and fear that I'll be flashing people...

Hey there,

I started using henna in February and have since done a monthly treatment. My initial goal was to use it for six months to see if there was a big difference in my hair and the answer is YES. So, I will continue using henna well into the future.

I was looking over my fotki the other day and there was a dramatic improvement in my hair within just two months of using it.

Check out my February, March, and April 2009 albums. http://www.fotki.com/new2naptural

I use to use LUSH henna Rouge before the price went up...I loved the way the henna made my hair feel, and it highlighted my sandy brown hair & gave me a really nice red hue. I like henna so much I was thinking about formulating a recipe to sell in my Nunu+Love shop...maybe I will
